Biography
Julian Allwood has a first degree in engineering from the University of Cambridge, and a PhD in the control of metal rolling processes and an MBA, both from Imperial College, London. The first 10 years of his career were funded by contracts with the Alcoa Technical Centre in Pittsburgh, working on the modelling and control of hot and cold strip rolling. In 1996 he was appointed as a lecturer in mechanical engineering at Imperial College, and moved to the University of Cambridge in 2000, where he is now a Reader in Engineering, and also Fellow and Director of Studies in Engineering at Gonville and Caius College.
He is joint editor-in-chief of the Journal of Materials Processing Technology, Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Technical Committee on metal forming of the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP) and has been appointed a Lead Author of the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change with a focus on mitigation in Industry. From 2009-2013 he is funded by a £1.5m EPSRC Leadership Fellowship to lead a major collaborative project on achieving global carbon emissions targets for steel and aluminium.
