Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

TechFest 2019

An article titled ‘Future of Rail: Artificial intelligence helps Network Rail’s maintenance regime’ published in New Civil Engineer includes the CSIC award-winning project monitoring a masonry viaduct in Leeds for Network Rail. CSIC's innovative approach to monitoring the health of ageing railway infrastructure won the New Civil Engineer TechFest Rail Visionary award 2019 (picture above).

Considering the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in rail, the New Civil Engineer article highlights a number of initiatives Network Rail and engineering partners are working on to transform rail project delivery and asset management.

CSIC Investigator and Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr Matthew DeJong, features explaining the benefits of the bespoke system that combines a network of Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing, acoustic emission sensors and high-sensitivity accelerometers to gain insight into the masonry viaduct. CSIC is exploring new approaches to asset management in collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute.
