Infrastucture Futureproofing workshop attracts senior industry and policy advisors

CSIC’s second workshop on Infrastructure Futureproofing, held in April this year, discussed the integration of futureproofing into asset management practice.

Attended by delegates from London Underground, Costain, UCL, IBM, Crossrail, John Dora Consulting, Heathrow, Cementation Skanska, CIRIA, Network Rail, Arup, Highways Agency, Atkins, Halcrow/CH2M and Infrastructure UK, the designed-for-industry workshop was led by CSIC’s Dr Tariq Masood, Dr Jennifer Schooling and Professor Duncan McFarlane.

Professor McFarlane introduced the CSIC infrastructure futureproofing project to demonstrate how futureproofing dimensions are resilient to unexpected/uncontrollable events and circumstances and have the capability to adapt or respond to changing needs, uses and capacities. The workshop explained how it is possible to integrate futureproofing into asset management practice.

"The aim of this workshop and the underlying project is to propose a set of guidelines that can be used to integrate futureproofing considerations into the ongoing management of key infrastructure assets.  It may sometimes turn out that appropriate action is, in fact, to do nothing with regard to futureproofing, but we want this to be a conscious decision rather than a convenient omission from the asset management process," said Professor McFarlane.
