Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

Industry partners 'chit-chat'

There was competition on the croquet lawn at Trinity Hall but the CSIC Summer Event for Industry Partners was altogether convivial and informative.

CSIC Head Professor Robert Mair thanked the Industry Partners attending for their support for the Centre explaining why collaboration with industry is vital to the development and deployment of CSIC’s sensing technologies and essential to transforming the future of infrastructure and construction.

Chit-chat shaped the afternoon when CSIC Research Associates gave a series of Pecha Kucha presentations (the Japanese term translates to ‘chit-chat’). The fast-paced, concise and visually-driven format which presents 20 slides for 20 seconds each, showcased the RA’s latest projects updating Industry Partners on CSIC’s current ventures.

In the spirit of ‘knowledge transfer’ - a core part of the CSIC ethos - a number of Industry Partners presented Pecha Kuchas giving a constructive account of their own industry projects, challenges and outcomes.

Jennifer Schooling, Director of CSIC, said: “Collaborating with our Industry Partners is integral to the success of CSIC and accelerates the process of developing tools and technologies beneficial to the construction and infrastructure industry. Our Pecha Kuchas confirmed the fresh and forward thinking emerging from our Centre, invited lively discussion and attracted rave reviews.”

The event attracted 48 delegates from Industry Partner companies and organisations including: Crossrail, Geosense, Highways Agency, Toshiba Research Europe, Skanska, Transport for London, Omnisense, Redbite, Aeroflex, CH2M Hill, GE Aviation Systems, Strainstall UK Ltd, Thales, Senceive, Costain, WSP, Soldata, RolaTube, Mott MacDonald, Topcon and Imperial College.
