Dr Jennifer Schooling, Director of CSIC, will chair a panel considering ‘The path to whole-life performance’ at a CIRIA event ‘The new age of construction: technology as an enabler’.
This event marks the inaugural virtual conference for CSIC Partner CIRIA, (Construction Industry Research and Information Association), a neutral, independent and not-for-profit body that works to drive collaboration across built environment and construction sectors for the identification, development and transfer of knowledge. During a time of rapid transformation for the industry, the CIRIA conference hopes to demonstrate how advancements in technology are boosting productivity, streamlining construction processes, generating data to inform strategic decisions and supporting whole-life performance.

The conference will consider the recent advances in good practice and performance improvement and explore the industry’s response to global trends, challenges and opportunities through illustrative case studies. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss what changes the industry needs to make, and what technology and innovations it should adopt and develop to modernise the ecosystem.
‘The path to whole-life performance’ panel, which will be moderated by Dr Schooling, and takes place from 12 to 12.30pm on Wednesday 10 March, features a number of industry experts, including: Mark Greatorex-Davies, Geotechnical Engineer, Maritime and Aviation, Royal Haskoning DHV; Leo McKibbins, Technical Director, and Chris Power, Engineering Geologist, Mott MacDonald; Graham Webb, Principal Engineer, WSP; Dave Cousins CEng MICE, Principal Engineer, James Fisher Testing Services; Amrit Ghose, National Framework Director, Waterman Group; Peter Kinghan, Technical Director SLR Consulting.
The conference will be introduced by Sam Stacey, Challenge Director, Transforming Construction at Innovate UK and a keynote, titled ‘How are technology and processes reshaping the construction industry?’, will be presented by Keith Waller, Programme Director at the Construction Innovation Hub.
“CSIC’s work brings focus to the benefits of data as an engineering tool to understand the whole-life of an asset. Our Smart Sustainability paper sets out how this approach enables a whole-life, value-based decision-making process for asset management, a move to risk-based maintenance, and the futureproofing of our assets in relation to potential impacts of climate change. Understanding and optimising the whole-life performance of our infrastructure requires industry to make better use of insights from data on real performance to unlock more whole-life value from both new and existing assets,” said Dr Schooling. “As recommended in the Construction Leadership Council’s Procuring for Value report: ‘A whole-life integrated industry would improve productivity and end-user satisfaction and produce wider societal benefits.’”
