Ground Engineering article proves performance of CSIC and Cementation Skanska collaboration

Industry Partner Cementation Skanska explains the benefits of its long-term collaboration with CSIC in the leading monthly industry title Ground Engineering.

CSIC’s innovative work on fibre optic smart sensors for a number of Cementation Skanska projects has provided data “that could be the key to pile testing giving results that enable performance-based design”, according to the article, Pile testing: Proven Performance in the June edition of Ground Engineering.

Interviewed for the feature, Cementation Skanska Chief Engineer, Andy Bell, and Geotechnical Engineer, Echo Ouyang, explain how the CSIC fibre optic smart sensors have been successfully deployed for pile testing at three major projects that are using different piling techniques in varied ground conditions. Resulting data has validated Cementation Skanska’s pile design and the company believes its long-term collaboration with CSIC “puts it in good stead to deliver commercial benefits from the use of fibre optics”.

“The additional data provided by fibre optics allows us to be more informed and better assess the risks,” said Andy Bell.
