Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

Empowering young people to become the climate-aware built environment professionals of the future: What do we need to do now?

Friday 5th November 2021, 8am-9am

As the Built Environment and Infrastructure sectors strive toward meeting net zero carbon objectives, the professions within these sectors – and the skills needed to perform these jobs – will also need to adapt. In this event, we will ask:

  • What skills will the climate-aware Built Environment and Infrastructure professionals of the future need to have?

  • How will these professions need to change and adapt, during the working lives of today’s young professionals, in order to meet net zero goals?

  • What are the barriers to these changes, and what is required from today’s industry leaders to bring about these changes?

  • How will higher education in the Built Environment and Infrastructure fields need to evolve, in order to enable these future professionals to get the skills they need?

The event will be split into two components. Beginning with short video submissions from young people and early-career professionals, presenting the key challenges and opportunities as they see them, we will then move into a panel discussion between young professionals and sector leaders. This discussion will build on the issues raised in the videos and point towards potential solutions that can drive progress in these areas.

This event has been organised by Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), National Infrastructure Commission Young People's Panel (NIC YPP), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
