‘Challenges and rewards of being a volcanologist in Antarctica’

Professor JL Smellie, University of Leicester

Summary:

This talk shall focus on the particular challenges and unexpected rewards of working in Antarctica, a continent of extremes but which is also distinguished by the presence of numerous large volcanoes. Many of those volcanoes erupted under the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and they are known as glaciovolcanoes. They are becoming a major source of information on past environments, and thereby past climate, information that shall be increasingly important if society is to understand and mitigate the impacts of a rapidly warming world.
