Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

Digital Construction on a Shoestring is an approach to increasing the digital capabilities of companies in the construction sector by deploying low cost solutions one at a time. The aim is to rapidly accelerate digital use by reducing both cost and complexity of solutions by making use of off-the-shelf technologies and open source software. This could apply to both on-site and off-site construction. The approach involves identifying prioritised needs, developing specifications around these needs, and then assembling solutions from simple building blocks. The ultimate aim of Shoestring is to develop a web based digital solution design platform which can allow a solution developer or user to specify their own solutions from the underlying building blocks to meet their specific needs.

This event will offer an introduction to the Shoestring Approach and involve an interactive discussion aimed at identifying digital solution priorities. Demonstration systems from a parallel programme involving SME manufacturers will be shown.
