CSIC has been shortlisted in six categories for the Ground Engineering Awards 2019, for the Hooley Cuttings Fibre Optic Sensing project.

The project was a collaboration between Network Rail, BAM Nuttall, BAM Ritchies and L&C Precision and was led by CSIC Business Development Manager Philip Keenan. The categories in which CSIC have been shortlisted are:

  • Award for digital innovation
  • Award for equipment innovation
  • Award for technical excellence
  • Ground investigation project of the year - under £2M
  • Health and safety award
  • UK geotechnical team of the year.

The project monitored Hooley Cuttings near Croydon, the 170-year-old stretch of railway which is 30m deep and with steep cutting faces, using optical fibre strain sensor rockfall meshes. It was the first CSIC project to deploy two new fibre optic technology systems simultaneously, a super-fast FBG technology from CSIC and co-developer the Beijing Information and Science Technology University (BISTU), and the first commercially available long range dynamic Brillouinn system from Febus.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 5 June. For more details about the project or the equipment used, please .
