Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

Last February Dr Brian Sheil, Laing O’Rourke Associate Professor in Construction Engineering, stepped into the role of director at the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC). As he assumes this prestigious position, Dr Sheil reflects on the pivotal role of deriving actionable insights from data obtained from smart infrastructure.

Under his leadership, Dr. Sheil aims to build upon the significant progress made by CSIC in leveraging technology to tackle industry challenges. He acknowledges the challenges posed by the abundance of data, highlighting the need for a shift in mindset from simply accumulating more data to extracting relevant insights. He cautions against overreliance on AI, emphasizing the importance of fundamental data engineering principles in ensuring data quality and utility.

At the heart of CSIC's mission under Dr. Sheil's directorship is a commitment to developing and deploying cutting-edge sensing technologies to address real-world challenges in infrastructure and construction. He pledges to continue fostering a culture of innovation, nurturing talent, and building strong partnerships with industry, academia, and government agencies.
