Registration for the National Association of Construction Frameworks (NACF) webinar about how public sector procurement is evolving to maximise the reduction of carbon in the built environment is now open.

The webinar, on 12 May at 11am, will highlight how public sector procurement is moving towards net zero, how the construction industry is innovating in response and why it’s time to take action that counts.

The public sector, which controls more than 26% of construction work (worth over £30 billion a year) can drive real change. But translating a climate emergency policy into the physical delivery of a care programme, new school, leisure centre or housing stock can be challenging. The CSIC-hosted Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment (which forms part of the Construction Leadership Council’s Construct Zero initiative), is key to supporting the NACF to support clients in the net zero delivery of projects. The NACF is one of six organisations announced as early adopters of the Code in March 2022.

“Understanding the issues faced by public sector organisations, many of whom have declared their own climate emergencies, spurred the NACF members on to understand what that means in terms of practical and economically viable delivery at a local level, and what the NACF can do to better support clients to achieve their net zero obligations through the support and commitment of contractor partners,” said Peter Yates, Vice Chairman, NACF and Regional Framework Director at Constructing West Midlands (CWM). 

The webinar will feature a number of short presentations by leading professionals championing carbon reduction in the built environment and will shine a light on the benefits of public and private sectors collaborating to drive towards net zero procurement. Speakers include Dr Jennifer Schooling OBE, Director of CSIC, and Sara Barnes, Preconstruction & Marketing Manager, Interclass, Chris Clarke and Emma Bull, NACF Environmental Leads and Gavin Marshall, Sustainable Procurement Manager, Orbis Procurement.

Construction has a significant part to play in helping to address the climate crisis. The building, operation and maintenance of the built environment accounts for 45% of total UK carbon emissions. Climate change cannot be tackled without the full involvement of construction and active behavioural change. The webinar will include case studies of schools, workspace and leisure facilities built with dramatic carbon savings, analysis of practical measures and tools to procure towards net zero – including through SME contractors and supply chains, and better understanding of how the right collaborative relationships can deliver sustainable developments.
