Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

CSIC is among only 11 shortlisted entries for the Royal Academy of Engineering Bhattacharyya Award which celebrates sustained and strategic collaboration that delivers real-world benefits.

The Bhattacharyya Award is a new annual award celebrating collaboration between academia and industry and the prize of £25,000 will be awarded to the team who best show how industry and universities can work together. The CSIC entry was selected to represent the University of Cambridge and has been chosen to be part of the final 11 from a very competitive field.

“We are delighted to be shortlisted for this prestigious award that values collaboration between academia and industry,” says Dr Jennifer Schooling, Director of CSIC. “Over the past decade, CSIC has worked closely with partner organisations to develop and demonstrate approaches to data acquisition and innovative applications of technologies to help establish the UK market for smart infrastructure and construction. This collaboration is the cornerstone of CSIC’s approach and enables application of smart infrastructure solutions to live projects to build sector confidence and accelerate industry uptake for better outcomes. Our close and productive relationships with our industry partners and organisations are and will continue to be the key to success.”

As one of the shortlisted organisations, CSIC is now preparing a short video to present its work and demonstrate the real-world beneficial impacts of collaborating with industry, which is the next step in the award process.

The government announced the award in July 2019 as a tribute to Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya KT CBE FREng FRS, the Regius Professor of Manufacturing at the University of Warwick and founder of the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). Universities and colleges were invited to submit one entry from across any area of their work. The judging panel for the award is chaired by Professor Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FREng FRS.
