Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

This month’s CSIC Smart Infrastructure Blog by Vladimir Vilde, CSIC Research Associate, invites industry practitioners interested in deploying Computer Vision-based solutions to join a new special interest group.

The Blog follows a CSIC workshop, led by Vilde, held earlier this year where there was expressed interest from industry partners in forming a special interest group to explore the potential and challenges of Computer Vision (CV) in civil engineering. He writes: “CV technologies are more efficient and versatile than ever before. The last decade has marked considerable progress in the capabilities of cameras and computers making CV affordable for a wide range of uses, from families detecting wildlife in their garden, to NASA scientists guiding a robot on Mars.”

CV shows potential to add value in civil engineering applications and the CSIC virtual workshop ‘Computer Vision Beyond Black Boxes’ which was organised in early 2021 for industry partners attracted many attendees and interest in exploring the potential further. This has led to the formation of a CSIC Computer Vision special interest group with the aim of collaborating to share information and experiences in using the technology to increase knowledge and understanding. For more information and details on how to join the special interest group, read the full Smart Infrastructure Blog here.

• The informative and thought-provoking monthly blogs are written by members of the CSIC team, partners and industry experts to showcase opinions and ideas from the forefront of smart infrastructure and construction.
