Register now for the 10thInternational Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground to be held at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, from 27 to 29 June 2022.
The International Symposium, which is hosted by the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, attracts the community of world-leading geotechnical professionals and academics with particular interest in underground construction in soft ground. Bringing together academia and industry and providing an opportunity for open dialogue and new insights into practice and research, the themes for the 10th International Symposium include:
- Field case studies
- Physical and numerical modelling of tunnels and deep excavations in soft ground
- The effect of underground construction activities on existing structures
- Design and application of ground improvement for underground construction
- Sensing technologies and monitoring for underground construction in soft ground
- Ground movements, interaction with existing structures and mitigation measures
- Seismic response of underground infrastructure in soft ground
Special lectures will be presented by: Alison Norrish, Director and Fellow of Arup, who leads the design of major infrastructure projects in the rail, road and aviation sectors specialising in underground and tunnelling projects in the UK and Asia; Prof Chungsik Yoo, Professor of Civil and Construction Systems Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Korea and President of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS); Prof Mike Mooney, Professor of Civil Engineering and the Grewcock Distinguished Chair of Underground Construction & Tunneling at Colorado School of Mines. The Fujita Lecture will be presented by Professor Robert Mair and the Bright Sparks Lecture will be presented by James P. Hambleton, Louis Berger Junior Professor, Northwestern University Illinois.
The first two days of the Symposium will feature technical sessions with presentations of General Reports and individual papers. The third day will be dedicated to the technical visit to the work sites of the new Thames Tideway Tunnel project on a privately chartered boat on the River Thames. The visit will showcase the tunnelling and deep excavation works for the new 25 km ‘super sewer’, which will run through the centre of London close to many of the city’s key historic buildings. There will be ample opportunity to meet with colleagues at the Welcome Reception in the beautiful grounds of Churchill College and at the symposium dinner.
