Dr Petras Swissler, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, USA, delivered a compelling CSIC research talk titled “Challenges of Achieving Biological-Scale Self-Assembly in Robotics.” His presentation offered a deep dive into cutting-edge advances in artificial intelligence, data processing, and scalable robotics systems.

Dr Swissler discussed groundbreaking research led by his team, emphasising the development of novel algorithms with the potential to transform data analysis across diverse scientific fields. He illustrated this through case studies showing how these frameworks enhance predictive modelling and automated decision-making in real-world applications.

Central to the talk was the challenge of achieving large-scale self-assembly in robotic systems—an area where nature significantly outpaces current technology. Dr Swissler highlighted how biological systems like ant colonies, capable of forming complex structures with hundreds of thousands of individuals, starkly contrast with today’s robotic collectives, typically limited to fewer than a dozen units.

His recent research focuses on bridging this gap by creating algorithms designed to scale robotic assemblies from small clusters to expansive collectives. These systems could enable more dynamic, adaptable robotic swarms for tasks such as disaster response, environmental monitoring, and industrial automation.

Dr Swissler underscored the critical need for interdisciplinary collaboration, calling for partnerships between research institutions and technology developers to accelerate progress. The talk concluded with a forward-looking perspective on how integrating insights from biological systems could unlock unprecedented capabilities in robotics, setting the stage for future innovations in autonomous systems and AI-driven technologies.
