Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment features in Infrastructure Intelligence

An article presenting the Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment written by Dr Jennifer Schooling calls for commitment to collaborative action to achieve net zero.

Following the publication of the Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment Issue 1.0 on 15 June, industry title Infrastructure Intelligence has published an article written by CSIC Director Dr Jennifer Schooling explaining the development of and need for the Code, which is jointly published by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) as part of the Council’s Construct Zero initiative and CSIC.  

While the Code’s reporting mechanism provides a point of difference from existing initiatives, it is designed to work alongside them. The Code recognises that we must start making meaningful change, and we have to start making it today. Dr Jennifer Schooling 

Developed by the Achieving Net Zero Cross-Industry Working Group, which emerged from a roundtable hosted by CSIC in March last year, the Working Group currently comprises more than 40 representatives from a diverse range of consultants, contractors, industry groups and local and central government, including: Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy; Infrastructure and Projects Authority; Environment Agency; Highways England; Skanska UK and the National Association of Construction Frameworks (NACF). Read more about the Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment here.

In the article Dr Schooling highlights the reporting aspect of the Code: “While the Code’s reporting mechanism provides a point of difference from existing initiatives, it is designed to work alongside them. The Code recognises that we must start making meaningful change, and we have to start making it today. Not tomorrow, not next week and certainly not next year. I urge you to visit the CSIC's website to read the Code to understand what is required and register interest. By working together towards a greater good we all make progress.”

Taking a collaborative, supportive and positive approach to driving progress to achieve carbon targets is crucial. Dr Schooling writes: “Collaboration and commitment will be key to success, and with alignment of ambition across all parties we can progress towards net zero carbon at the pace required. The Code provides an encouraging, supportive and collaborative approach to reducing carbon. It is essential that our industry reduces carbon emissions and the more organisations that sign up to the Code, the more we will achieve.”
