The MX3D Printed Bridge—a pioneering 3D-printed steel structure in Amsterdam—has earned a distinguished honour, winning the American Welding Society (AWS) Award for “Outstanding Development in Fabrication.” This prestigious award, which has recognised historic engineering accomplishments such as the Hoover Dam, places the MX3D Bridge alongside some of the most iconic achievements in engineering history. Created through advanced robotic arms that deposited layers of molten steel, the bridge represents a significant step forward in additive manufacturing and structural design.
The Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) was instrumental in monitoring the bridge’s performance, with Mohammed Elshafie and Liam Butler leading the work in collaboration with Data-Centric Engineering teams at the Alan Turing Institute, led by Professor Mark Girolami. Together, they developed sophisticated systems to monitor the bridge’s structural health in real-time, providing essential data on the resilience and durability of 3D-printed steel in a live environment. These insights are invaluable for the future of similar engineering projects.
The MX3D Printed Bridge project demonstrates an extraordinary blend of cutting-edge fabrication, data-driven engineering, and innovative structural monitoring, setting a new standard in fabrication and design.
Congratulations to all involved!
