Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction

Transforming infrastructure through smarter information

CRCBE Community Event

On May 6, 2025, the University of Cambridge's Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) hosted the Carbon Reduction Code for the Built Environment (CRCBE) Community Workshop. This in-person event convened industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the strategic vision for the CRCBE, strengthen the community around it, and share knowledge and experiences.

The workshop featured four key sessions:

  • The Future of the Carbon Code: Participants explored the role of the CRCBE in achieving a net-zero construction industry, discussing shared aspirations and strategies for increasing engagement and updating the Code.
  • Increasing Code Engagement: Attendees considered immediate next steps to grow the CRCBE community, identifying routes for raising awareness and formalizing action points.
  • Code Progression: The session addressed challenges in compliance and how the community can support organizations in progressing through the commitment levels—from Pledgers to Champions.
  • Research Showcase: Researchers presented high-level summaries of their work on low-carbon construction, including topics such as digital transformation, sustainable transport pathways, functionally graded concrete, and the role of social media in spreading low-carbon awareness.

The event was well attended, with the majority of the Code Advisory Group (CAG) and all Champion organizations represented. The collaborative discussions underscored the importance of collective action and knowledge sharing in driving the construction industry toward net-zero carbon emissions.
