CSIC held a roundtable discussion as a fringe event at the Global Engineering Congress (GEC) at the ICE Headquarters in London. The roundtable, Smart sustainability - Data and information as engineering tools to mitigate climate change, included leading figures from the infrastructure and construction sector, academia, sustainability, finance, insurance, development and policy.

Dr Kemp’s lecture titled ‘A glimpse into the future.... by considering the past. The challenges, the opportunities – and our consciences,’ draws attention to the potential of smarter infrastructure to support a healthier and more prosperous society but raises questions about the ethics required to safeguard data use and how to ensure that, as humans, we remain an essential part of the decision-making process.

Ahead of the Government’s response to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee report titled 'Off-site Manufacture for construction: building for change', Professor Lord Robert Mair, Head of CSIC, and a member of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, is featured in the industry publication Infrastructure Intelligence.

A collaborative project between CSIC and industry partners Geocisa UK, Dragados and Transport for London, monitoring heritage buildings with fibre optic sensors during the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade, has won the New Civil Engineer (NCE) TechFest 2018 Award for Research Impact: Application in the Industry.
